BlogsCanada is no longer publishing new monthly top ten lists. The concept was to be more like a juried art show than like a popularity contest. There was some inherent unfairness in the methodology (nomination/judging) and the amount of work involved in judging and publishing the monthly list became a bit overwhelming.
The archives will remain online and the blogs listed are highly recommended.
My heartfelt thanks go out to Bree, Jay and Vicki for all of their hard work. Thanks, also, to all who participated by nominating their favourite blogs.
In the not-too-distant future, BlogsCanada will be presenting new Top Blogs lists based upon incoming links. Stay tuned.

Ghost of a fleaNick Packwood's
Ghost of a flea is another excellent Canadian blog that ought to have been on a top ten list long before now. An interesting new feature is his weekly
Winston Review of blogs. An eclectic mix of conservative politics and pop culture game and music reviews, "the flea" is, according to Jay, "world class with the traffic to prove it."

A Journey Through TimeNominator Kim (
Bacon and Eh's) said
A Journey Through Time "is like no other blog I've had the pleasure of reading. Greg, a University student from Ontario has a love of history and has a way of conveying the past that makes it interesting and enjoyable for even the average person to understand. You don't have to have a love of history to find his posts exciting and informative."

From the mind of one of the few Liberals in Calgary who haven't been hunted down and driven out of town yet."
www.calgarygrit.blogspot.com

Evolution of ArtTop-blogger Louise (
CowDog) says: "Meredith is an amazing artist, as yet not well known but I'm sure that someday soon we'll all be clamouring to have something of hers in our collections. This is the blog she uses to talk about/show off her artwork. Also because it looks like the title of her 'blog is "evolution o fart", which just cracks everyone up."
http://evolutionofart.modblog.com/
halfacanuckWitty observations on pop culture and politics, an annotated blogroll and some provocative material like "Bush is a Liberal" combine to make an attractive and interesting read.
www.xanga.com/skin.asp?user=halfacanuck
marmalade.caMarmalade author Kelly: "It's been a labour of love for me for over 2 years now, and with it I have learned more things about myself than I dared imagine. Yup.

Points of InformationThe nominator: "It's a group blog, with insightful political commentary focusing more on electoral reform and legislation than specific parties." There's an interesting group mix, too, and that's something we like to see. This site was a favourite during the recent election campaign.

renaissance grrrl's My Daily PhotoNominator becky (
grrlmeetsworld): "Angela's photos are phenomenal -- every day she puts up a picture that is either breathtaking, hilarious, or just plain funky. I think she's in denial about her abilities as a photographer -- and while she's currently a student in Biochemistry, I think her true calling is in photography. After at her page, I know you'll think so too."

Times New Roman OnlineTop Blogger
Raymond Tomlin: "Andrew is consistently thoughtful and humane as he offers his perspective on issues of the day, writes intelligently and well, links widely to articles and stories of consuming interest, and even though he has a young family to care for, somehow finds the time to post regularly. For me, Andrew represents everything that is good about the blogging phenomena; more than just another voice that is a part of the new digital democracy, Andrew's is a bright and caring voice, and his blog always a compelling read."
http://timesnewroman.inknoise.com/tnro
Yarn HarlotThe nominator put it this way: "It's funny. Darned funny. Darned funny about knitting. I hear what you are thinking...who would care about knitting, even if it is darned funny? The stories of family life, knitting, voodoo dolls and bitter yarn are fun for the non-knitting and told in an expressive Canadian voice."

BookninjaJudge Vicki: Bookninja finds unusual things to write about that I would never find on my own. ... The book reviews are presented as conversations and are well worth reading. Bookninja has chosen to use a bulletin board system for commenting and the approach seems to work well for them.
www.bookninja.com/
CrewSpew Blog - MuchMusicTop Blogs nominator Sam Panco tells us that the CrewSpew Blog gives us "the inside scoop from staff we aren't able to hear from in any other form at Canada's Music video channel, MuchMusic. Lot's of jokes, music info and general sillyness."
www.muchmusic.com/insidemuch/blog/

http://navigatethestreets.com/blog
Recursive ProgressThe anonymous nominator put it nicely: "Grayson is all over the place with a wry, written nudge and a wink. Sometimes he's taking an unusual stab at politics, or politicians, or business issues, or social issues, or philosophical questions. His sources are from all over the place and his take on things is unusual."

sally mckayVicki's comments: Sally McKay's weblog should be a must read for people interested in the visual arts. Arresting images, great short videos, and interesting writing too.
www.digitalmediatree.com/sallymckay/
Stephen's WebJim's comments: Stephen Downes gets it. He effectively uses many the bells and whistles available to bloggers. He's widely syndicated as I keep finding out from my referrer logs. Jay says: This is a great use of the blogging media... Information density plus good design.
www.downes.ca
Tilting at WindmillsJay's comments: Solid. The analysis is often original and I was not able to predict where they would come down on a given issue. I like the international element. Jim's comments: I like the idea that the two men of la-mancha.net come from the right and from the left and can get along and publish a joint blog. It's this sort of thing that will go a long way in stemming that "echo chamber" criticism we so often hear applied to political blogs.
www.la-mancha.net/
Toronto at HomeJay's comments: This is a good example of a business blog...packed with useful information. Jim sats: I like the professional look and feel here. It suits a business blog.
http://toreal.blogs.com/

http://debbyestratigacos.mu.nu/
burntglassTop Blogs judge Briana says: Funky site design, and nice mix of rhetoric and emotion. In one entry, Alison makes some excellent points about the business of design ("why is it that everyone I meet claims to be a designer. What is it about this career that makes every average joe think he knows what’s best.") and lets her readers see through her eyes in small things too ("i'm fascinated by weather. storms excite me, rain calms me, snow makes me happy..."). A good 'get to know me' blog.
http://burntglass.com/weblog/

http://lenann.pitas.com/
halfgeek.netJudge Vicki says: I admit it, I have a weakness for weblogs that mix the personal and the political. Christine does this really well. Her enthusiaism for Canada is delightful and her photography is first rate. Her entries are well written and interesting. It is beautiful to look at.
www.halfgeek.net
Hockey NationJudge Vicki says: A good, well written and comprehensive hockey weblog. His opinions seem well thought out and a nice spin on things written in far less interesting ways in the newspaper. Judge Briana says: Well-written, with a good number of relevant links
http://hockeynation.blogspot.com/

www.trondata.net/~eden
New World BloggerJudge Vicki says: This weblogger has made a real commitment to explicating events in developing countries that don't make big news here. The written portion of the weblog is often news reports which make their point without much comment by the weblog's author. The photographs, taken by the author, are the best part of the weblog. Briana says: This blog provides a glimpse into a very different world than most Canadians live in. Kudos. Jay and Jim agree.
http://new-world-blogger.blogspot.com
ShatnerianJudge Jim says: Montrealer author, John, provides witty running commentary on pop culture and society with an emphasis on the entertainment world, particularly television. Briana calls it a "fun random collection of links and comments."

The Hockey PunditsA joint effort of Jeb Runquist, John Campea and Jordon Cooper (of February Top Blogs fame), The Hockey Pundits are just that. Inkless Wells Maclean's magazine's Ottawa insider and back page columnist Paul Wells is no stranger to most Canadian readers. Pornetry.comArtsy as it gets, Pornetry.com has nothing to do with porn. Strange and surreal, the photo galleries and mpeg videos are suggestively titled with such names as, "Thailand Joe Blobs" and "Chasing Tail Gently Down the Stream". Blog as art or art as blog? Who cares. It's worth spending some time exploring.
www.pornetry.com/pornetry_home.htm
ramcguire.comHeather (

http://seanincognito.blogspot.com/
vanramblings.comRaymond Tomlin introduces himself as "a veteran journalist and educator who has written frequently on the iconography of mainstream popular culture, covering cinema, popular music, dance, theatre, broadcasting, technology and the arts." Widely published, Raymond is now covering that eclectic mix of topics on his blog. Displaying pictures of Top Blogs judges above his blogroll warmed our hearts, too. Why doesn't everyone do that?

Writing for the WebJudge Jim says, "Crawford Kilian is Canada's coolest codger blogger." Crawford sets a fine example of his title topic and offers observations and tips from a wealth of real-world experience. Returned to NYC for college (Columbia '62), did two years in the US Army at Fort Ord, worked as apprentice tech writer in Berkeley. Vivid: Pieces From a Writer's NotebookSomehow, the word "blog" seems too clunky for describing Erin Noteboom's exquisite poetry journal. Erin was the winner of the CBC Canadian Literature Award (2001). The widely-published Waterloo poet writes, "I read in schools, give workshops, edit, and scrounge for grants. It's not quite a living..."

Colby Cosh
National Post columnist Colby Cosh's blog is a perfect example of how personal publishing differs from edited, big media publishing. Many of his entries serve to augment his NatPost columns with colourful expressions of which his editors would, no doubt, disapprove. Colby's good for vocabulary lessons, too. Who else uses words like "hecatomb" and "tergiversation"?
